If I could only give one piece of advice on how to improve your paintings it would be:
Always Do A Value Sketch
A value sketch is a quick drawing that takes only 30 to 60 seconds to do. It gives the artist a fast way to work out the composition and block in the 4 basic values. If you are not happy with the design or values, then do another quick sketch!
If the value sketch is not interesting, no amount of detail or color
will save the painting
It is the basic abstract shapes and values that attract a viewer’s attention. Many paintings suffer from a poor or weak arrangement of values which affects the painting’s focal area and unity of shapes. This sketch serves as a valuable reference while you work on and complete your painting.
